A $42,000 roof quote, a $11,500 roof, and the 3-day right to cancel every Houston senior should know about
A Houston homeowner was quoted $42,000 for a roof that costs $11,500. Here is how to check a roof price in 15 seconds and the Texas law that lets you cancel a contract signed at home within 3 business days.
Yesterday a Houston homeowner showed our team a signed quote from another roofing company for $42,000. Our online portal priced the same roof at $11,500 for our highest shingle option. Once the homeowner had our number, that company dropped its price to $23,000, and then to $12,000, for the same roof in the same week.
We are sharing this because we have noticed a pattern with older homeowners in our area: a company knocks, pushes for a signature that day, and leaves with a contract for two or three times what the roof should cost.
What a roof should actually cost
At roof.day we measure your roof from satellite imagery and show you a price in about 15 seconds, with no salesman. When you book the free visit, the Level 1 price becomes a not-to-exceed for 30 days.
Your 3-day right to cancel in Texas
If a contractor solicited the sale and you signed somewhere other than their place of business (your home, for example), you can cancel until midnight of the third business day after signing under Texas Business and Commerce Code Chapter 601.
The contractor must give you written notice of that right and a cancellation form at signing. They must refund what you paid within 10 business days after you cancel. Misrepresenting your right to cancel is itself a violation.
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule, 16 CFR Part 429, covers the same situation nationwide.
How to cancel
- Do it in writing, not by phone. A short note is enough: 'I am canceling the contract dated ___ for roofing work at ___.' Sign and date it.
- Send it before midnight of the third business day after you signed. Email and text both count as written; keep a copy and a screenshot.
- Send it to the name and address on your contract or cancellation form.
- If they gave you no written notice of your right to cancel, or they push back, call the Texas Attorney General consumer line at 800-621-0508 or talk to an attorney.

If insurance is involved
A roofer cannot act as your adjuster or negotiate your claim, and cannot waive or absorb your deductible. Contracts of $1,000 or more involving an insurance settlement must state that you have to pay your deductible. See the Texas Department of Insurance guide.
Five questions to ask any roofer at the door
- Can I have the price in writing and take three days to think about it?
- Where is your written notice of my right to cancel?
- Are you listed on the GAF Master Elite contractor locator?
- Will you show me the measurement your price is based on?
- What is your physical office address? (We are at 21418 Provincial Blvd, Katy, TX 77450.)
