# Houston Storm & Hail Damage: Insurance Claim Steps That Work

What to do in the first 72 hours after a Houston hailstorm, how to spot real damage, and how to run an insurance claim that actually gets approved.

After a Houston hail or windstorm, do four things in order: make the home safe and stop active water, photograph everything with dates, get a professional roof inspection with written documentation, then file the claim. Texas insurers generally must acknowledge a claim within 15 days and decide within 15 business days of receiving all requested information. Documentation gathered before the adjuster arrives is what determines the outcome.

## What should I do immediately after a Houston storm?

In the first 24-72 hours: stop active water intrusion, document everything, and avoid permanent repairs until the damage is recorded. Move belongings away from leaks, place buckets, photograph interior water stains with a timestamp, and have a roofer install an emergency tarp if water is entering. Keep every receipt — temporary mitigation is typically reimbursable under Texas policies.

Do **not** climb on a wet or storm-damaged roof. Do not let anyone perform permanent repairs before the damage is documented; you can forfeit reimbursement for work the adjuster never saw.

1.  **Safety first** — check for downed lines, sagging ceilings and standing water near electrical.
2.  **Stop the water** — tarp, buckets, move furniture. Photograph before you mitigate.
3.  **Date the storm** — note the exact date and time. Hail reports and radar archives corroborate your claim.
